## What is this service?

Professional dental hygiene helps maintain good oral health and prevents gum inflammation, bad breath and tooth loss. During the procedure plaque and tartar are removed and the condition of the teeth and gums is assessed. Regular dental hygiene is an important part of your pet’s overall health.

## How does it work?

At the start of the visit the veterinarian examines your pet and discusses the procedure and any alternatives with you. The service is then carried out safely — sedation or pain relief is used where needed so your pet stays as calm as possible.

At the end you receive clear care recommendations, and if necessary we schedule a follow-up visit or further treatment.

## Why regular dental hygiene matters

Plaque is a soft layer of bacteria that constantly forms on the surface of the teeth. If it is not removed in time, it hardens into tartar, causing serious oral and general health problems.

### ❗ The most common consequences

- **Gum inflammation (gingivitis).** Bacteria irritate the gums, which redden, swell and start to bleed. Untreated gingivitis progresses and becomes the start of more serious disease.
- **Periodontal disease.** Over time the tissues holding the tooth in the jaw are damaged. Teeth start to loosen, become painful and may fall out or need surgical removal.
- **Bad breath.** Multiplying bacteria cause a strong, persistent odor, often the first noticeable sign of oral disease.
- **Pain and discomfort.** Oral disease causes chronic pain that is not always obvious at first. The animal may avoid hard food, become irritable or less active.
- **Spread of infection in the body.** Oral bacteria can travel through the bloodstream to other organs and contribute to heart, liver or kidney damage, especially in older animals.
- **Bone loss.** Untreated periodontal disease causes the jawbone to dissolve, so even after tooth removal the oral condition can remain complicated.
