## What is this service?

In small-breed dogs (e.g. Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Pomeranians, etc.) the baby teeth often do not fall out on their own, even when the permanent teeth are already coming through. In such cases removal of the baby teeth is recommended to ensure a correct bite and good oral health.

## How does it work?

Baby tooth extraction is carried out:

- under general anesthesia, so the procedure is painless and safe;
- using special dental instruments suited to small-breed dogs;
- with great care, so the buds of the permanent teeth are not damaged.

Before the procedure the veterinarian assesses the dog’s age, the condition of its teeth and its general health. If needed, additional tests may be performed.

## Baby tooth extraction – what to know

### ❗ Why must baby teeth be removed?

Baby teeth not removed in time can cause:

- an incorrect bite;
- shifting or crowding of the permanent teeth;
- a build-up of food and plaque;
- early gum inflammation and periodontal disease;
- a higher risk of tooth fractures.

The longer the baby teeth remain next to the permanent ones, the greater the likelihood that more complex treatment will be needed in the future.

### ⏱️ When is the best time?

The procedure is usually recommended when:

- the dog is 8–10 months old;
- the permanent teeth have erupted but the baby teeth are still in place.

The optimal time is chosen individually, taking into account the breed and the course of tooth eruption.

- the dog usually recovers the same day;
- a short period of soft food may be prescribed;
- owners are given oral care recommendations.

Complications are rare, and a timely procedure helps avoid long-term problems in the future.
